保罗很可能在公元57年左右撰写罗马书，时间接近他第三次宣教旅程的尾声（使徒行传18章23节-19章41节），地点则可能是哥林多城。

此书信曾被指为有史以来最重要的神学文献。保罗在其中勾画出基督徒信仰的核心，也阐明了上帝使罪人得蒙拯救的完美计划。保罗就“义”这重要的课题详尽说明：人如何与上帝和好，并活出荣耀上帝的公义生命。
