The books of 1 and 2 Timothy are Paul’s heartfelt letters to his successor—Timothy. Their primary purpose is to encourage Timothy in his gospel ministry, because the work of preaching the gospel would become increasingly difficult in the last days. Paul’s exhortations to Timothy have not lost their significance over time and remain applicable to Christians today.

He solemnly urged the young Timothy to carefully watch over his life and the teaching of Scripture. The word “careful” means “to pay close and attentive attention,” just as many people monitor their physical health and take immediate action if something seems wrong. Through this book, you can learn how to speak and act wisely, guard the teaching, fight the good fight, finish the race you are called to run, and hold firmly to the faith, remaining faithful to the end.

Dr. Robert M. Solomon served as Bishop of the Methodist Church in Singapore from 2000 to 2012. After retiring, he has been invited to speak and teach at conferences around the world. He has authored more than 40 books, including Faithful to the End, The Relentless God, Your Life Can Be More Fulfilling, and A Spiritual Supply Station for Parents, among others.
